Caucasian guys, what has your experience been in Latin dance clubs?

1st July

I am curious to know about Caucasian males’ experiences in latin dance clubs. How do Latinas react or respond to you typically?

.

My good friend is Colombian, so I go out to these sometimes. I always have a great time, but I find that most of the girls are curious but do not actually approach me. They probably know that I can’t dance. Although, I have bought a few girls drinks at the bar and had good luck doing that; it’s the dudes you have to watch out for. Latin guys are very protective of their ladies.

The problem is that many white guys (like me) can’t dance for sh*t and Latin clubs are totally geared towards dancing. But the women are slammin’, so I’ll go to them regardless even if I look like a jackass.

Also, I’m really quitessentially white—6 ft tall, irish decent, and I’m a lawyer. Many times I find that I can’t connect on a cultural level (and it certainly doesn’t help that I don’t speak Spanish). But, you know, alcohol bridges all cultural gaps.

Which Latin dance workout program is better: Zumba or Core Rythms?

23rd June

Pros? Cons? (Of both, please.)

If you know of any other latin dance workout programs that are better than these, please let me know what they are and where I can find them online.

Thanks :)
*NOTE* I’m not talking about the actual Zumba class with an instructor, but the DVD’s.

I think, as with so many dance classes, it probably depends upon the teacher. I did try a zumba class. It was energetic and initially I thought it was fun – but by the third class I realised the teacher only knew a handful of dances and couldn’t dance herself, and it wasn’t really dancing but just moving around fast to loud music with a lot of shouting. I’m sure other classes are a lot better.

The Zumba training program reckons anybody can teach zumba if they take a one day course – and it shows. "There are no prerequisites to become a Zumba Instructor, although a fitness or dance background is always a plus.’ "Once you have taken a Zumba Basic… you are allowed to teach Zumba classes…and advertise yourself as a Zumba Instructor"

I did look at the Zumba dvd sets but they didn’t inspire me.

I hadn’t heard of Core Rhythms until I read your question and that looks far more interesting.

In the Zumba class that I went to there was no instruction on how to move – which muscles, how to improve, no feedback on if a move was right or not. Instructions focused only on doing steps, and leg and arm movements. Either you had "it" or you didn’t. The video on the Core Rhythms site looks a bit frantic but suggests they do try to tell you how to actually move by working your core muscles.

I’m tempted by the Core Rhythms programme.
